this Committee resolved to appeal : to all the treaty ports of China and Japan, and to the Colonies of Hong Kong and Singapore. They know that Houghtong has contributed largely already; but they would hope that the revelation of such overwhelming suffering will awaken such increased sympathy as will cheerfully contribute again. They think also that there be some who had not given before, who may now be glad to do so when the distress is known to be so great. They beg therefore to commend the matter to your deep sympathy.
I enclose copies of Mr. Richard's letters, as well as a minute of the names of the gentlemen composing the Committee here and the plans they have adopted. This will be a sufficient guarantee of the urgency of the case; the enclosed letters will tell their own story.
You will observe that Dr Nevius and the Revd Mr. Corbett have gone to join the Revd. Mr. Richard at Ching Chow foo; and that the British and United States Consuls at Chefoo have arranged to forward to them all monies without delay.
