THE SUBMARINE PHENIX
LOCAL INTEREST is attached to the loss by the fact that the Phenix, in company with another submarine, L'Espoir, was en route to Hong- kong from Saigon when the tragedy occurred. The two submarines were due to arrive here next week.
First report of the disaster was "Telegraph" in an exclusive cable from its London received by the Correspondent, received at 3 o'clock this morning, stating that the submarine had foundered.
"United Press" subsequently confirmed that the vessel dived to the bottom of Camranh Bay in 300 feet of water.
AT THIS DEPTH THE FRAIL SHELL OF THE VESSEL WOULD BE HOPELESSLY CRUSHED.
All hope has been abandoned for the crew of four officers and 59 men.
The submarine made a practice dive in Camranh Bay, one of the finest and deepest harbour in the world, on Thursday.
Normally it would have remained below the surface for two hours. Thirty hours had elapsed at midnight last night without the vessel re-appearing.

Battle In H.K. Village
ONE of the most amazing pitched battles in Hongkong within recent years caused pan- demonium in the Causeway Bay village of Tai Hang last night, when 1,000 villagers defended them. selves against over 100 members of Hongkong triad societies, who are believed to have staged the raid in order to terrorise the young men of the village into joining the triad societies.
The attackers, who staged the affair about half past ten last night, entered the village armed with poles, iron bars and concealed knives and diggers,
Children and pedestrians were slapped and pushed out of the way as the invaders penetrated towards the market. In the market they upset stalls and damaged other property, but once the alarm had been raised the villagers banded themselves together, and counter-attacked, using their bare fists, poles and sticks.
INVADERS REPELLED
The combined strength and determination of the villagers evidently surprised the attackers, who, though better armed, were forced to retreat.
When police whistles were blown, the invaders filed in all directions.
Police admit that two villagers were injured in the fight and and have been admitted to hospital. They were stabbed in the arm. It is believed that some of the attackers were also wounded, but they escaped.
Although the activities of the telad societies are secret, numbers of Tai Hang village Inds had been. approached to join them, and because they refused to do so or to pay tribute to the societies, last night's ruíd was staged.

[SERIOUS SITUATION"
LONDON, June 16.
A SEMI-OFFICIAL statement issued here to-day said that if the new Japanese demands persist, an extremely serious situation will arise, and Great Britain will have "to consider what immediate action can be taken to protect British interests in China.”
The statement added that British official circles "take
a very serious view of the further Japanese demands
which raise the most wide issues affecting the rights of all those powers which have treaty rights in China.”.
Referring to the Japanese spokesman's recent threatening utterances in Tientsin, the state- ment says: "It is clear from these statements that the sur- render of the four accused Chinese is no longer the reason
