boat. When I first arrived at Akow's place I saw several men there, all unknown to me, but they disappeared. I had no previous knowledge of Chan Cheung. I believe the people residing in the house at Gap Street will support what I have said. I did not know I could bring them to give evidence. On the evening of the 25th November a woman named Akam took two children to the Theatre. I left the house at 6 o'clock, and came home at 11. She saw me and we talked together after her return.
Chan Cheung states:-
I am under sentence of five years penal servitude and to be thrice publicly flogged. I was convicted of robbing a boat in the Harbour of a quantity of Opium. I am a native of On Lan, San On District. On Lan is on the sea coast. I am 34 years of age. I am married. I have three children - all boys - the eldest is 11 years of age. My family is now at Lautin, San On. (21 miles from my native place.) I am a laborer in the employ of a clansman, a farmer, named Chan Achat at On Lan for about a year and a half. Before that I was a fisherman. I never resided in Hongtong. On the 7th or 9th September I went to Youmatee. I came to Youmatee to work in the vegetable garden.
