THE LONDONERS

FIFTY YEARS AGO the London County Council was born. To celebrate a jubilco unique in municipal history the L.C.C. was presented with a documentary film of London's history, "The Londoners”.

Made by the Realist Film Unit, it tells vividly the story of London's mighty growth from aqualor and chaos and misery to order and health and controlled progress.

It is London's story, produced by a Londoner, 24-year-old John Taylor, and featuring the Londoner. These stills from the film show a contury of London's history.

London's' hospitals are fitted with the most modern" scientifió equipment, and hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of apparatus is available to anyone who needs it,

The nineteenth-century school was dirty, dark and vermin infested; and in it the half-trained teacher, harassed and ill-paid, wrestled with a class of 100 or more children.

Scientific miracles are worked in London's health pools every day. These kickdies are being mas. saged in the pool at Queen Mary's Hospital.

Squalor still jostles the new prosperity, but more than half a million people have been housed and rehoused by the County Council and Borough Councils of London.

Modern schools, where teaching methods move with the times and the most recent apparatus is providvil, have replaced the grim, windowless classrooms against which Dickens cant puigned.

Moderí traffic passes over IF'citminster Bridge, with the gymbet of Britain's Government in the background, and in the foref ground the home of London's governing body,
