Dr. Ayres. Sirs, I am bound to visit the Gaol every day.

Then every prisoner who comes in is marched down a hall and comes one by one before me only. I do not think there would be any benefit gained by seeing the prisoners in their Cells. I have men under treatment and a book of the prisoner's health in which I make entries. There is no attendance book. In Wandsworth Gaol a prisoner's work is in accordance with my directions, and it is the same here. The Superintendent keeps a list daily of the sick and of prisoners about to undergo corporal punishment. I sign a printed Certificate of his fitness. I am always present except when the flogging is on the breech. I think a cane is better than a cat, and flogging on the breech is much more severe as it is moist.
