1. Pauschy Surgeon. I have known all but 2 or 3 of the prisoners to have been on altered rations. I think 3/4 th of meat is enough, not too much. I think it would be well to give gruel to those who are so inclined.
A man on bread and water gets 1 1/2 th of bread a day. This, I think, is enough. If prisoners fall off in weight they are ordered extra rations. They tell the Doctor they are weak. We try to keep them up to their entrance weight. We never give suet pudding. Many men get curry and rice, and some Europeans. The prisoners prefer it and so do some Europeans. The amount of meat is then reduced to allow for the curry powder.
1 lb of vegetables is not too much. Tea is not a good thing except for Chinamen. Cocoa has been suggested by the Doctor.
