CHINA

OFFENSIVES SLOWING DOWN

(Continued from Page 1.)

Japanese are now driving northwards ngainst the retreating Chinese forces. The 15th Chinese Division is reported to be entrenched on strategie heights near Chongkoling, about ten miles north of Tsengshing.

The Chinese withdrawal from Tsengshing is admitted in Chinese despatches. Prior to the withdrawal, the Chinese dynamited the Japanese barracks and amunition dumps which they previously had coptured.

Honan Drive Ends

"Trans-Ocean" reports that the Japanese have capture Tanhsien, in north-eastern Hainan. The capture was effected by the Kawasaki Divi- sion, which operated in conjunction with શ naval detachment from H.1.J.M.S. Ithinki.

The same agency reports that the Chinese offensive in Honan has been brought to an end with the Japanese re-capture of Chungmu, a Hoangho River city south of Kaifeng.

A Chinese spokesman in Chungking claims that the Japanese garrison In Kalfeng was almost completely wiped out when the Chinese broke into the city on two occasions last week.

It.

admitted, however, that Kaifeng is again in Japanese hands, but it is claimed that the remainder of the garrison there is completely
