Mr Paulin said men dressing hemp play a useful role among sentenced men at this prison, who it is thought should be made to work while being taught a trade. This is not hard labor. It could be made remunerative, I think. The Surgeon General has differed. 5000 lengths of twine were sent by the Inspector General to dress about 18 months back. They are about 16 inches by 6, and the men are nearly finished. About 25 were employed at this task a little time back. Hakkas generally do this work and not Punti men.
Stone polishing has been suggested as a useful industry. There are 12 stone polishing machines in working order. This was introduced by Sir Richard MacDonnell in 1868.
