the Navy.
This was announced by Sir Terence O'Connor, the Solicitor-General, when a Standing Commillee of the louse of Commons again considered the Government's Criminal Justice Bill recently.
Sir Terence moved an amendment, which was passed, applying to the Navy the section of the bill proposing to abolish corporal punishment. It was not necessary, he said, to do this In the case of the Army and the Air Force, because flogging did not apply there.
Sir Archibald Southby (Cons. Epsom), a former naval ofleer asked when the Admiralty's request reach ed the Home Office and why the Committee was not told of it when they were discussing the clause abolishing flogging
Sir Terence said the Admiralty bed their view some time ago,
It did not scem proper to try to Influence the decision of the Com- mittee simply because the Board of Admiralty had taken that view.
Sections applying the proposal to abolish penal servitude, liard labour and prison divisions to the Navy were also agreed to.
Sir Terence and the clause was one of the most important in the bill.
"It goes a long way," he added,
we are now leaving the law without ment against the abolition of flogging. any sanction against the hardened criminal. This clause is in effect the sanction which is going to be operated In many of the cases which have deded any treatinent previously ex- cept that of the lash."

"Hide And Seek" In Church--And Why
BREAM (Gloucestershire).
CHILDREN have been allowed by the vicar, the Rev. Arthur Parr, to play "hide-and-seek" in the parish church here--but only to illustrate a simple address he gave them.
This was revealed recently when the vicar attacked, at the annual Parochial Church Council meeting, the apathy of some adults towards the church.
He pointed out that the most successful church attendances were made by the children, of] Bream.
The vicar suggested that the grown-ups should drop in at the chlidren's services to see how well they were attended.
