Oakum picking. Chinamen dislike it, because in my opinion they cannot concentrate their attention so much on the work, besides then they are made to pick.
Since I made them pick a certain quantity, since then they have disliked the work.
To pick 3lb a day, a man has to work hard. They are all timed.
There is a scale fixed. Man... jigger...
and as each prisoner hands up his quantity of oakum, he gives up his jigger.
The oakum is weighed before delivery to a prisoner and as he comes to hard labour he brings it with him.
