JOSEPH ALOYSIUS LYONS, the Australian statesman, was born in Tasmania of Irish parents In September 1879,
At the age of nine he started work as an office boy. Then after some time on the land he became a teacher and later studied at Tasmania University, carning distinction in mathematics.

SYDNEY, Apr. 7. MR. JOSEPH ALOY- SIUS LYONS, Prime Minister of Australia, who has been seriously ill after suffering two heart attacks, died this morning. He was in his 60th year.
Mr. Lyons died in the presence of Dame Enid, his wife, who had scarcely left his bedside for two days.
Federal and State members of the Cabinet were present in the hospital, and many were in tears.
Mr. Lyons amazed the doctors by rallying after half a dozen heart seizures.
