JOSEPH ALOYSIUS LYONS, the Australian statesman, was born in Tasmania of Irish parents in September 1879,

At the age of nine he started work- as an office boy. Then after some time on the Innd he became a teacher and later studied at Tasmania University, earning distinction in mathematics.

Entering polities at 30, he elected M.P. for Wilmot. In 1014 he became Minister of Education and Raliways and Treasurer.

From 1923 to 1928 he was Premier and Treasurer of Tasmanis, whose Onances he rehabilitated.

He was sent to the Federal Parlia ment and when the Scullin Labour Governinent came into power in 1920 was made Postmaster-General Minister for Works.

JOSEPH ALOY- SIUS LYONS, Prime Minister of Australia, who has been seriously ill after suffering two heart attacks, died this morning. He was in his 60th year.

Mr. Lyons died in the presence of Dame Enid, his wife, who had scarcely left his bedside for two days.

Federal and State members of the Cabinet were present in the hospital, and many were in tears.

Mr. Lyons amazed the doctors by rallying after half a dozen heart seizures.
