to be informed whether the Surveyor General had any reason to question the correctness of the alleged deviation, I have the honour to enclose copy of a Report from Mr. Orme which puts the matter in its true light-before Your Lordship.

The Report is accompanied by a mass of which the plan sent to Your Lordship by the War Office is but a portion, and I cannot but think that it would have been more satisfactory to have at once placed the Secretary of State for War in possession of the information which I have now to supplement, and from which both Mau Fortshill and the Secretary Hardy will learn that the loss of the ground in question has been more than amply compensated by the longer and level, and therefore, more valuable tracts which have been left to the military Authorities by the deviations of the road from the line originally proposed.
