It is only justice to state that Mr. Austin has afforded me entire satisfaction in the performance of his duties generally, and his watchful expenditure of the Colony's funds cannot be too highly commended. His foresight and good judgment have saved the Colony considerable sums of money.

Having had considerable loss by exchange in 1875 and 1873, and my income having been also reduced by £100 per annum by the stoppage of the West Indian Emigration allowance and the consequent loss of fees in the Audit Office Accounts, I venture to solicit your Excellency's interposition with the Earl of Carnarvon.
