Up to 1870 - the Consular accounts in China & Japan were audited by the Auditor General of Hongkong, and were debited £500 from Rupees 42970 from Colonial Funds: When this arrangement was discontinued, the late M. Rennie of both offices was pensioned on the abolition

He conducting paragraph.

Despatch No = 1 of 1 Jan – 1871 (107) will show that Mr Austin came to receive £250 additional, when the duties of the Auditor were attached to the Colonial Secretary.

Since that time the Civil List Ordinance has never been repealed & consequently £500 may be nominally laid to be still the salary of the Auditor.
