NOBODY in the little Bucks village of Long Crendon knew until recently that Mrs. Beatrice Shrimpton, their model 53-years-old postmistress, had for the past 15 years been leading a double life.
Besides the village post office she kept a tobacconist's shop where, with her husband, 4ter two sons, and a daughter, she lived in a very modest way.
Each morning she would rise at 5.30 and do the housework before opening the post office.
She hardly ever went out of doors and had only been outside
the village for a few times.
Never once in her life had she been to a cinema.
She indulged neither in drink nor gambling,
Yet in the past 16 years she had been indulging in falsifica-
tion and forgery with depositors' Post Office Savings Bank books
to the extent of hundreds of pounds.
This was made easier for her by reason of the fact that many
of the villagers gave their bank-books into her keeping.
Recently inspectors came to see the books,
