Alone Through the Forbidden Larsd (Faber and Faber, 12s. 6d.) is a thril jing vividly observed record of this young Austrian's wanderings through the forbidden territories of Soviet Asia.
He had been there durlog the war an military service and so his return was asking for trouble. In spite of forged papera, he was recognised and arrested, but he cunningly managed to disprove his own identity.
The most exciting parts of this book, though, are not the accounts of the author's occasional death-risking clashes with Soviet authority, but his descriptions of a straggling tract of the world in which old and new- primitive, almost prehistoric 1fe and Marxist politics-meet and sniff encli other like suspicious animals

This remarkable travel book is Illus trated by more than a hundred magul- ficent photographs.
