LEAD AGAINST
THE M.C.C. English Bowlers Fail To Trouble Batsmen
The South Africans were in à very favourable posi- tion at the end of the second day's play in the Fourth Cricket Test against the M.C.C. at Johannesburg yester- day. When stumps were drawn, they had 249 on the. board for the loss of only three wickets. In the first in- nings, the M.C.C, were all out for 215.
No play was possible yesterday morning owing to rain. The wicket was soaked as the result of Sunday's and yesterday's downpour.
Play started at 2 pan., with Ken-
neth Farnes opening the English ni-
tack. He thrice struck the batsmen Hockey
on the body, nnd Goddard, having no
allps but short legs, tied down Van
Der Byl and Melville.
Verlly, however, was not danger-
ous.
Van Der Byl, when 22, was drop- ped by Farnes in the gully of Wit- kinson.
The batsmen and driving confidently, Verity and Wilkinson sent down several loose Juns, which were punished accord- ingly.

The United Services, though not altogether a fully representa- tive side, beat the Shanghai Rugby team by eight points to three on the Club ground at Happy Valley yesterday. Askwith, a cripple right from the beginning of the game when he went on the field with bruised ribs, scored two wonderful tries by sheer speed. Twice during the game he had to leave the field to recuperate but he made his return in time to execute the second try which put the issue beyond doubt.

DESPITE GIVING A FAR BETTER DISPLAY THAN THEY DID THE PREVIOUS DAY, THE MANILA INTERPORT FOOT- BALLERS WERE DEFEATED AGAIN YESTERDAY WHEN THEY MET THE COMBINED CHINESE, LOSING BY 5-3 AFTER THE SCORES HAD BEEN DEADLOCKED AT 3-3 AT HALF-TIME.
As a matter of fact, the visitors were the better side in the first half and should have been in the lead at the change-over. But at one period the Chinese were leading 3-1, much against the run of play. The Filipinos missed several scaring opportunities; otherwise they would de finitely have been ahead,
Once four Manslu forwards were round the ball getting in one other's way with Tam Kwan-koni, the Chinese goal-keeper, drawn out of his charge; and on another octa- sion, Reyes sent in a terrifle drive when Tant was again out of goal, but the ball bit Holsserie, who did not bave time to get out of the way! RESENTED
It is evident there to a growing dislike for the restrictions placed on touring sides... and not only in Australia.
Each Australian cricketer comes here with a Hat of "Must Nots” in his} pocket. He must not bring his wife, the mustn't talk to strangers or slay jout late, he must not be interviewed,
etc. etc.
In fact, he has to promise to be a very good boy, just as our teams do when they go abroad.
It does not occur to sport control- fers that men sent overseas to play for their country can be depended upon to do their 100 per cent, best regardless of contracts. -
Certainly tow will have sympathy for the Australlon Board if Barnes out-smarts the intention of their two-years ban. It is ridiculous that A sports body should take upon itself the right to dictate where, and also when, a man may earn his living:
