TAKING THE "STING' OUT OF MATHEMATICS

Mr. Hope-Jones Conquers the Improper Fraction

IF a train goes 31⁄2 miles in 41⁄2 minutes, how far will it go in 581⁄2 minutes?

That sum, bearing memories of chewed pens, tousled hair and stinging palms, would be worked out (by those who could work it out!) in this way:

In 9 tnutes, it goes 7 miles

Mr. W. Hope-Jones, Old Etonian teacher of mathematics at Eton, Buttered the educational and arithmetical duve-rotes of Britain when he delivered his presidential address to the Mathematical Association at King's College.

He suggested it would be easier to do, and easier to check, If the sum were worked out as follows:

In 4 minutes it goes 34 miles

In 1 minute It goes 34 miles

41⁄2 miles

7 miles

In 58 minutes it goes 7 of 58% = 7 x 01⁄2 151⁄21⁄2 miles

The whole idea of the improper fraction (in which the top half is larger than the bottom half) fils Mr. Hope-Jones with the irritation which an unnecessary and difficult process rouses in the possessor of a necessary and easy one.

Similarly, he produces a construc-

tive revolution on the theory of can- cellation, which leads to untidy work, forgotten figures, wrong answers, and stinging palms,

THAT SYMBOL "PI"

Again, Mr. Hope-Jones prefers to

refer to that intolerable symbol pl (which will not come out, though you take it to 10,000 places of decimals) by 3 1-7 rather than 22/7-because it is easier of comprehension.

You can (if you are a small boy) understand eating three and one-
