dying. But he refused, for many long months, to die. There was so much he had to do, so much evil in the world in which he gave spiritual guidance to four hundred million of its people, that this brave old man willed himself to live beyond his allotted span.

He received the sacrament of Extreme Unction nearly six months ago. That is, the last anointing. But his recovery then was miraculous.

Himself, he thought that his early love of the mountains gave him enduring strength. As a mountaineer, he made a new and more difficult way to the sum- mit of Mount Rosa in the Alps, second highest mountain in Europe.

He was a holy man, as Bishop Valtorta said yesterday. His temporal kingdom extended far beyond the bounds of the Vatican.

On earth, he was omnipotent in the sense that, to the devout of the greatest and most power- ful Church, his word Was Divine.

Yet with omnipotence there was simplicity in the Pope who has just died. When he lived in England, which was many years ago, he lived as millions of Eng- lishmen lived. He used to cat his meals at railway station buf- fets. Once in Leeds he was [cating a ham sandwich. The train set off without him. He sprinted. Porters cheered as the future Pope swung himself | into the guard's vån.

But it is not this characteris- tic of simplicityby, which he will be remembered by the world by Catholics and non-Catho- lies alike.

He was the "Pope of Penice” -the one man in the world who was not afraid of the Totali- tarian dictatora. He condemned "heretical" speeches made by Mussolini, snubbed Hitler on his recent visit to, Rome. No other man could have done that.

Almost to the end, the Popo Instated on celebrating Mass. From the time he first became. a priest to his death be cele brated Mans more than 20,000 tlines. Nothing, no one, could! stop him no matter how 111 UNI WANI

The Pope

A newborn babe, Achille Ratti, Jay, in his crib in a humble Hallan home. The sun shone behind n church tower, cust the shadow of a'cross into the room. The shadow rested on the baby's crib.

That was in 1857.

In 1922, that babe became.Pope Pius XI, the 281st head of the Roman Catholic church.

When a boy he was an industrious student. He early decided to enter the priesthood.

As a priest, mountain climbing was his favourite sport. Once his guide slipped into a grevice. The priest wrapped his robe around his waist, rescued the guide after a great struggle.

He climbed the Matterhorn, Mt. Blone, Vesuvius, published pamphlets and a book on climbing.

He introduced radio, telephone, autos to the Vatican, encouraged others to engage in sports.

The Vatican is Alled with priceless arl treasures, but the Pope's living quarters are as simple as the rooms of any parish priest.

rhapet, breakfasted; 3:30 to 4, received all callers, from kings to bumble pilgrims, 4, he dined alone while a secretary read to him; 4:30, he wus driven in the Vatican grounds; In the evening he received more callers, retired at 10:30 after a light supper and prayers.

He ate simply; a few monks prepared his soup, meat, fish, cheese, fruit, brend and milk.

World-wide peace was his great goal.

He won fame as a diplomat and a scholar, even before he became Pope.

He and Mussolini signed the Lateran Pact in 1920, ending a tong feud between Church and State.

Once a week, on Fridays, the Pope filmself knelt before a simple mortal.

A modest little priest, who did not occupy a position of rank, quietly mounted the steps to the papal suite and in his chape! Histened to the Pope's confession, grunted him absolution.

For even the Pop, to whom millions look up as God's earthly re- presentative, mny sin as a man.

Then his ronfessar knelt, received the papal benediction.

How a New Pope is Chosen

Any male Christian, not a heretic or near relative of a former Fape, may

be chosen. But for 500 years Popes have been chosen from the College of Cardinals (60 members to-day).

The Cardinals meet 15 days after death of a Pope. Then Vatican doors

are scaled shut; all communication with outside world is banned. He is asked if he accepts office, what name he will take.

Secret ballots are taken until one Cardinul receives two-thirds of votes. He answers. dons papal robe and Fisherman's Ring, and is present to waiting crowd outside,

Since 1501, ull Popes have been Italian.
