I have the honor to state
that I am in receipt of No. Herbert's
letter of the 29th, in reply to
that of mine dated the 18th, in
which he informs me
that Your Lordship would be pleased to
allow me such further leave as
may be necessary in order to enable me to be called to the Bar, and if after my
call I should be desirous of resigning my appointment, Your Lordship would be glad to recommend to H. E. the Governor of Hongkong to relieve me from
undertaking to refund
the amount of half pay
