AUSTRALIAN TENNIS

Sydney, Jan. 30.

Jack Bromwich won the Australian singles tennis championship to-day, beating Adrian Quist 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

The women's doubles title was re- tained by Nancy Wynne and Th-im- Coyne, who beat Mrs. Weslacott and

Club Victory Over Navy A Fine Feat

(Continued from Page 8)

is poorer than anyone else's in the batting line, was the first victim of a couple of brilliant catches by Bond at square leg.uff balls which, shall we say, were short of u length. I heard them netually described quite differently! It was good cricket and Mitchell had to work his fast bowler Stoker pretty hard to keep the runs down. I understand he bowled beutifully, although his figures are This not so good as those of Robb, was yet one more match where the last wicket was kept up just to the end but the Navy deserved their draw for the grand way in which they went out after win, Stilt that dve minutes I have hinted at might have made the difference.

SMALL SCORERS

The Recreio second eleven only managed to get six more than their Arst eleven did, but it was quite suf- fcient to beat Craigongower who gol eight less than the Civil Service seniors! It is not often that a first and second eleven who only total 142 runs between them get away with two winst

The other small scoring mateli from one point of view, was when the Civil Servien second were dis- missed by the University for 74. Barrow alone (21 pot out) scened likely to do much. Personally think it is high time he went back to the first. The University got go- ing pretty well, chiefly thanks to G. Hong Choy who retired with his score at 41. Matthews was not out 10. He is, I think, lately from the D.B.S, as is Gegg who, though he failed with the bat, took 4 wickets for 22 runs.

SUNDAY GAMES

I had meant to go over and have

a look in the afternoon at the Navy and Volunteer match, but completely succumbed in favour of a good hearty walk over the hillsides to Deep Water Bay. It probably did me much more good and anyway. the

Volunteers managed to win without my moral support. For the Navy, Whitmorsh, who has definite- ly returned to form, knocked up 46 while Carver had 30 and Bowden had 10. Their total was 144 which wasn't such a bad one. However, the Volunteers dealt with the matter Army. R. M. King and Ride started off well and George Souza produced another nice knock of 30. Perry

made 28 (what a pity it wasn't the day before that he had made it) and the Volunteers got the runs for G wickets.

I see that the K.C.C. second even with Mackay and R. T. Broadbridge to help them could do no better than 73 against the Police. Pope, had for 20 and Carey 3 for 19. The Police it oft the runs, though the victory was not perhaps so crushing as the score would appear, a great many runs having been made in the last wicket or two. W. L. Clark hit up 65 not out whlie Oakley scored 38. I observe that Mr. Extras was Recond top scorer with 37 in a score of 196.

BATTERY BEAT KUMAONS

On St. Joseph's ground yesterday 24th Battery nccounted for Kumaon Rifles by seven goals to one in a very one-sided game.

The Kumaons, although not show- ing much tactical skill, are to be congratulated on the plucky display they put up against a team obviously their superiors.

The Battery opened the game and elmost immediately Owen

racing down the wing bent three defenders and scored from a very ncute angle. From a free tick hit the crossbar and Atkins collecting the ball from the rebound passed to Marshall who had no dificulty in slipping it past Bhawan Singh.

The

Kumaon goalkeeper wax obviously new to the game and had he received more practice before this game he would easily have saved nt least three of the goals,

Narain Singh played a fine game And he and Krishna Singh were easily the best forwards for the Kumaons, while in the defence Lleuts. Tan and Tomlinson were always trying hard to hold the entire R. A. forward line, and in this they were successful. Krishna Singh opened the Kumaons account with a hard drive. Narain Singh scored twice for the Kumaons but each timo he was ruled off-side.

very

Just before half time Owen took the ball through on his own and pass- ed to Hodgson who sent a terrific drive into the back of the net.

In the second halt Owens dashed up the right, cut in and beat Bhawan Singh with a magnifcent shot.

Nurain Singh was playing well 'and' after taking the ball through he was his drive just very unlucky when went over the top. Kumaons were awarded a penalty for handling, but Krishna Singh sent over the bar.

Further foals were scored by Mar- shall, Atkins and Owen. In the last few minutes the Kumaons were attacking strongly, but
