JURY HEAR STORY OF LIFE "AT BREAKING POINT"

Man in Verandah Murder Charge 'Had 4d. in Bank'

OPENING the case at the Old Bailey recently against

Sidney George Paul (46), salesman, of Rosebery Vale, Ruislip, Middlesex, charged with the murder of his 38-year-old wife, Claire Paul, in the verandah of their home, Mr. G. B. McClure said that it might strike the jury as a sad story.

"It is a story which you may have read the like of," he con- tinued, "a kind of story where a breaking point is reached in someone's existence-everything is pressing and things are too hard-and it sometimes ends in murder and suicide, or the suicide of two people."

Paul pleaded not guilty.

Mr. McClure stated that Paul apparently had lived on the best of terms with his wife, a Bel- gian.

He had said all along that rome stranger entered his house on the day his wife was killed--a nun he de- scribed us tall, wearing dark clothes and having a sear on his check.

For Officials

Valuable lessons were learned by Home Office and police officials recently when 100 air-raid warning sirens walled in unison over London in, the biggest test ever made in Britain.

The most important discoveries Jare:

There are a number of "dend" spola in the London area which the omcint police sirens cannot reach under bad weather con- ditions.

There are a number of other places in Central London where the sirens cannot drown the roar of the traffic.

The "warbling" warning signat is not so audible as the continuous

pitch" "steady

signal which means "ralders passed."

In an emergency the official signals would be taken up by hundreds of factory and workshop hooters which were not included in the test.

Reports of 8,000 policemen, 000 representatives of focal authorities und of many private firms who were appointed as listeners are being collected.

A reporter listened for the sirens from the roof of the News Chronicle offices. The nearest were Snow H (640 yards away as the siren wails); Dow, Street (1,100 yards away), and Scotland Yard (1,320 yards away),

No sound could be heard from Snow Hill, there was not a murmur from Bow Street (where the siren refused to work), bút a faint walling came from the direction of Scotland Yard.

This experiment stresses the need for internal warning Bystems factorles, workshops and large business offices into which the sound of external warnings do not ponet- jrate, or are liable to be drowned by

the noise of machinery.

Although there is art official A.R.P. jhandbook on precautions for businem premises, so far there has been no official drive to encourage employers to install internal sirens, -
