Charged with obtaining $19,000 from a widow by a confidence trick, Li Hei-ting, master of the Yu Hai Leung Import and Export Firm, Connaught Road Central, appeared at the Criminal Sessions, yesterday.

Hls Honour Sir Atholl MacGregor, Chief Justice, who returned from furlough on Wednesday. was wel- comed back by the Hon. Mr. Leo D'Almada Jnr., who was instructed by Mr. M. A. da Silva for the pro- secution. Mr. D. J. N. Anderson was instructed by Mr. G. S. Hugh- Jones for the defence.

Complainant in the case was Chlu Li-tze, widow, of No. 16, Village Road, and the alleged trickery took place in December,

The following Jury was empanell- ed: Messrs. G. A. Lawrence (Fore- man), S. K. Heiberg, F. M. Garcia, E. A. Noronha, D. L. Ballantyne, Lim Kim-chong and An Chung-yue. An objection to the Chinese mem- bers of the Jury by defendant was disallowed by Sir Atholl. The reason given was that they may have been known to the complainant.

In his opening, Mr. D'Almada said complainant's husband had died ten years ago and left her $100,000. About December last year the obtained a loan on certain shares to make up the sum of $20,000 for a Canton firm in which she was in- terested. This was eventually not

it to him sooner or later.

On leaving the premises, the party went to the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, as LI told her the deeds were in his safe deposit box.

On arriving at the Bank, com- plainant and her daughter-in-law were told to walt outside, After about 20 minutes, defendant failed to return, and complainant returned to the shop 23 Connaught Rond Central,

On kecing Li two weeks later, she was told to wait for the money, and that if she went to the Pollce she would not get it back.

She had visited Li's office many times later, but when she could not locate the broker Choy, П report was made to the Police, and Li was arrested on November 18.

Chiu Li-tre, in evidence, said that she had not taken action earlier be- cause she had trusted the broker Choy, and she had hoped to get the money back from Li Jater.

Mr. Anderson then sald that the only sum of money owing to her was 5000, a gambling debt which was lost by Lt to her at a fontan game at his house. This was denied. by Chlu, who said she never gam-
