The Experts

Tell You Their Secrets

IS your husband an intend-

ing Father Christmas? The professional ones in the big stores say that only com- petent actors make good Father Christmases.

It's important, you see, to gain the confidence of the chil dren, and to be capable of win- ning them over from a state of open disbelief. You've got to have the patter.

Father Christmases this year tend to be large men, aged from sixty to seventy, which is all it should be.

If you're being a Father Christ- mas, it's no good looking like an ordinary man. It's worth spending a little money on your beard and wig, Crepe hair may look all right to the grown-ups, but It doesn't fool the children.

Make it Lifelike

THEN you must put plenty of grease-paint on your cheeks, remembering that drive through the now. The hood sometimes righ- tens the bables, so it must be easily pulled up and down.

Belted gown, hood, and shoulder- ape ought, of course, to be red flannel or serie or some woollen stredged with witile fur or wool.

So Santa Claus of 1938 ought to be tall and broad, genial of expres- sion, somewhere around sixty years old. To reach perfection he should have grown and trained his beard for about five years,

Your husband may not 11 this bill at all, but then the children are probably tolerant, and like him to have his fun on Christmas Eve.

This housecoat with its allde fastened front has a lastex back which gives easy skirt fulness. The scalloped close collar is solid colour with white rickrack. Navy percale patterned in a spaced floral design.

will

Choose vases that

contrast with your wallpaper, or you will lose If the beauty of your pictures. On-white or cream holders are best for dark walls, and coloured ones for plain cream and buff walls.

Do not overload the vases with flowers. They are made In such in- triguing shapes and culourings that it is a pity to let the flowers hide their attractiveness. Do not build your arrangements too high, either, or they will look top-heavy, and not at all pleasing.

Four or Ave single chrysant- hemums, a few anemones, or some late roses will look charming in a wail vase. Be careful, however, that you choose your blooms as carefully es your vases, so that they stand out against their background.

So much depends on the way

you pack

presents

You may think that there is

nothing to do when you have bought a present except to pack 1. Exactly. But the packing is very important.

Obviously the gift must be packed safely if it is to be sent by pust. It is true that one of the pleasantest things about receiv ing a present is the surprise, but it's the wrong sort of surprise It your friend finds that you have sent him a parcel of fine white powder made from particularly expensive coffee service.

Remember that # parcel sent by any form of transport is bound to get મ fearful buffeting at this time of the year.

The first essential, therefore, is some sort of wadding to absorb shocks. One of the simplest and most effective materials is cor- rugated paper.

Falling this, crumpled news- paper is one of the most efficient shock absorbers.

Whatever packing you use, the Impariant point is that the pre- sent should not be loose within the parcel.

Beautiful and original packing can add enormously to the attrac tiveness of a gift. A few pence spent on the trimmings of even a half-crown present are a good in- vestment If

If you measure the value of a gift by the pleasure It gives. Now a few practical points. Never skimp white tissue paper. A few cents will buy an enorm ous quantity at your local station- ers, and it makes any present look twice as expensive.

The box is very importont. I the shop gave you one, well and good; if not, buy one. For two. pence or threepence you can get an attractive box in gilt or silver. Christmas Beals tire another thing to make a present look smart. Use them both on the in- ner and ouler wrappers. It you want your surprise kept until Christmas Day itself, you can get scals with "Do not open December 23" on them.
