A
FORMER butcher boy who courted an hotel cook was ordered at Leeds Assizes recently to pay her £50 damages for failing to keep his promise to marry her.
The girl, Rose Gregory, of Guilthwaite, near Rother- ham, sued Christopher William Lawson Steel, now a mas- ter butcher, of Greame House, Muston, near Filey.
Dr. E. C. Chappell, for the girl, said there were two verbal promises of marriage, one in June, 1935, a month before Steel reached 21, and another in 1937.
"Then," said counsel, "this young man's ardour had ecoted tremendous- ty, and he took an engagement ring which he had given the plaintif from her by force.

She accepted him, remarking: "I will try and make you a good wife." Last year she noticed that he was more or less Indifferent to her.
Dr. Chappell said the parties met in 1923 at Scarborough, and he added: "There passed between this pair a great number of affectionnie letters, many have heaps of crosses. There to marry was rescinded by mutual are 24 dozen on one alone."
