British Lamb Is Now Cheaper

Than Imported

FARMERS HARD HIT BY PRICE SLUMP

Butchers at Home are puzzled and farmers are alarmed at the depressed state of prices for British beef, mutton and lamb.

Imported frozen lamb is now making more money than lamb from the Scotch hills.

New Zealand lamb is quoted in the current number of the "Meat Trades Journal," at the wholesaler-to-retaller price of 51. 1d. per lb., Australian lamb is quoted at bs., but Scotch lamb is fetching only 4s, Bd.

re-

These wholesale prices are flected in, the retail market, where el but the tip-top English lamb is cheaper than the inported.

A year ago Scotch lambs at this time of the year was 100. per lib. dearer than imported.

Nor can the roast beef of old England do much more than holl its own with the chilled product of the Argentine frigorifiros. English sides are quotes at 4s. 4. per 9, Argentine at 34. 01-a difference

of #4d, or under id. per 1.

ONE ADVANTAGE

A year ago the English enjoyed a premium of 1s, and this difference

of 1d. per b. was always accepted as representing the intrinse advan- inge of English beef, because less is fast in shrinkage when it is cooked compared with chilled beef.

Argentine hindquarters are quafect above English sides, at 4. 00. compared with 45. 4d. per Bib.
