British Lamb Is Now Cheaper
Than Imported
FARMERS HARD HIT BY PRICE SLUMP
Butchers at Home are puzzled and farmers are alarmed at the depressed state of prices for British beef, mutton and lamb.
Imported frozen lamb is now making more money than lamb from the Scotch hills.
New Zealand lamb is quoted in the current number of the "Ment Trades Journal," at the wholesaler-to-retailer price of 5s. 1d. per 8lb., Australian lamb is quoted at 59., but Scotch lamb is fetching only 4s. 8d.
These wholesale prices are TC- Beeted in the retail market, where all but the tip-top English lamb le cheaper than the Imported.
A year ago Scotch lamb at this time of the year was 10d. per lb. dearer than inported,
Nor can the roast beef of old England do much more than hold its own with the chilled product of the Argentine frigorificos. English sides are quoted at 45, 4d. per 8lb. Argentine at 38. 00-a difference of @d, or under 1d. per lb.
