With entire absence of pomp and c'rcumstanco Itolland recently com memorated the fact strat ten years ago the first official passenger, flight between Amsterdam and Batavia took place. In 1928, Smirnoff, Aler and Veenendani left Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, thus Inaugurating a servico which, in the course of yearn, has been down with ever-increasing re- lability and regularity.

reputation which is of the greatest also for commerce and industry a significance not only for aviation but well as for the general prestige of the Dutch nation.”
THE foundations of the service had, of course, already been laid. Several men had previous ly covered the distance. The first flight was made in 1924 by Van der Hoop in a ̈ Fokker F7; The development of aviation has he was followed in 1927 by been so rapid that it is difficult to Geysendorfter acting as pilot of rentise all the new possibilities that a plane chartered by the Ameri-it offers. It is the K.N.L.L.M. who, as representatives of the K.L.M., have looked after its nanelai, comunercial and technical interests in the East.
TEMIE fact that there were no festivities in connection with the anniversary is typical of the spirit of quiet eliciency and the keen sence of duty with which those who founded the service still care daily and unostentatiously for a develop-E regularity with which the ment and improvement.
Nevertheless a short survey of what has been achieved in the past ten years will not be without in- terest.
To date 612 return flights have, been made to the Dutch East Indies. In 1928 the duration of the journey was 10 days, the cruising speed 95 mah, and the loading capacity half ton. Now, after ten years, the maximum duration of the flight is 6 days, the cruising speed has been raised to 175 mph, and the loading capacity to over 11⁄2 tons, whilst the frequency of the service has been increased from once fortnight to three times a week. In fact:
service between Amsterdam and Batavia is operated Is shown by the fact that the 233 flights made in the first nine months of this year and scheduled to take 1,435 days required only 12 days more; this is less than 0.9 deviation from schedule.
Although the frequency was in- creased enormously and the duration of the lights was halved a greater regularity was achieved. The fourth column giving the percentage delay (ie. the number of days overdue in relation to the number of scheduled flying days) shows a steady decrease. Regularity is now six times greater than in 1931. Considering however, a that a day's delay on a six day
