In case of war, the War Department reports, the United States would be more self-sustaining than any other nation, but would lack 21 materials essential to defence. These include coconut shells, coffee, hides, iodine, oplum, quinine, rubber, slik, wool and various minerals. Coconut shells produce the best charcoal for gas masks. Cattle could not be slaughtered solely for hides without reducing the meat supply. This nailon produces only two-thirds the wool it uses in peacetime. Above are indien- tive scenes. Upper left.
