NEW FIRES ARE RAGING in Canton.

The Shameen engines were turned out last night to fight a big conflagration just behind the Shakee maloo.

The fires appear to be fairly widespread, and many shops, godowns and other buildings have been destroyed during the past 48 hours.

One Chinese plain-clothes man was captured by the Japanese in the act of setting fire to a building. He was shot on the spot and was left tied up in the street as 'a warning to others.
