Japanese SOUTH SEA ISLANDS Complaint

B. & S. STEAMER FIRES

ON TROOPS

SHANGHAI, Nov. 8.

A STRONG PROTEST was filed by Mr. Shinrokuro Hidaka, Japanese Consul- General here, with the British authorities on Mon- day over the alleged firing on the rear of the Japanese forces engaged in mopping up Chinese guerillas in the vicinity of Changkakang, 9 miles east of Kiangyin on the south bank of the Yangtse from the Butterfield and Swire steamer Whangpoo on October 24, a Japanese military spokesman revealed to-day.

Between 5 and 6 shols were fired from the Whangpoo towards cicarly marked Japanese positions, Burst of rifle and machine-gun fire consisting of 40 to 60 rounds followed at 7.35 and 7.40 o'clock in the same morning when the Whangpon was moving downstream.

Firing from the vessel was positive. ly witnessed by Japanese troops, including the commander of the detachment, the Army spokesman further naserted.

Judging from the sound, the machine-gun was believed to be Bren gon of Czecho-Slovak manufac- ture which is widely used Chinese

by troops.

The Japanese troops did not fire a single shot upon the vessel.
