With the exception of the Oleai &c traders,

it would appear to me to be difficult to

know with whom to make trade conventions.

The Caroline Archipelago extends from

E. to W. over a space of 1550

miles. It consists of about

300 or 400 Islands & Islets

of various sizes. Some of these Islands are

inhabited by a savage or semi-savage people

speaking different dialects; - Some treacherous

& not to be trusted,

others have come under

the influence of Missionaries. The only traffic between

the islanders generally & white men is on a small

scale, some adventurous kind, by Ships

passing through. The trade between the Australian Colonies
