BROADRIBB FINDS TALENT IN COURT

"To have the stuffing knocked out of him and the Ten Commandments knocked into him," 17-years-old Leonard Garrett stepped from the dock at London Sessions recently to start life as a professional boxer.

That was how the acting Deputy Chairman, Mr. Richard O'Sullivan, K.C., described it, after he had listened to an appeal on Garrett's behalf from Mr. Ted Broadribb, former manager of Tommy Farr, and now in- structor in the Ten Commandments to Garrett.

Garrett, it was stated, had been before the court a number of times previously, and on this occasion was up for sentence after pleading gulity at Lam-1.

One, an ex-Borstal boy, became Byweight champion of the world. So Mr. O'Sullivan bound Garrett over, and put him in the care of Mr. Broadribb, who will, as he himself said afterwards, "train him on the right lines."

"THEY ALL FORGET"

"I have been doing this sort of thing for years, and not one of my boys have let me down. I first of all give them a good talking to, tell them to forget their past, and then put them through their paces in the gym.

"I the boy has any boxing tenden- cles in him, I soon get it out of him. It does not take them long to forget the bad things in their life,

"They get so keen on their work and are always so grateful of the chance to make name for them- selves in the ring that they have no time or inclination to ret into

He has lost the power to manufacture his own blood, and is being kept alive only by weekly injections of blood substitute costing 308. each. His strange case began in 1927, when he was invalided out of the Navy following recurring bouts of pneumonia. He recovered, and held various shore jobs until January last year, when he collapsed again.

Doctors could not diagnose his trouble, but when it was found that no nourishment could help him it was realised that he had ceased to manufacture blood.

A 24-year-old Sidcup (Kent) shop-owner, Mr. Ernest Greenfield, has unearthed on hill-top at Riseley, near Farningham, 70 skeletons of Jutish warriors and women, said by the Venerable Bede to be the ancestors of the people of Kent.
