Memorandum in
which I have named the points upon which it is desirable that
HM's Govt should be fully informed.
You will confer with Consul
Church as
to the best mode of obtaining this information, & will pursue the inquiries separately or in conjunction with him
as you may find most convenient to
yourself.
You will succeed
in fulfilling to the best of your combined ability the object of the expedition.
I also return
you
the three
tracings of land lots inclosed in your Desp. No. 28 of April 15, 1873 on the subject of the Bonin Islands & I append copies of some papers which
may prove serviceable to you in conducting this inquiry
