MERCURY FAILS Just Short of Non-Stop Record Mark

London, Oct. 8. Mercury, upper component of the composite Mayo aircraft, though fail- ing to break the world's long dig- tance non-stop record of 0,300 miles from Moscow to California by just over 300 miles, smashed the previous record of 8,215 miles for the longest non-stop seaplane fight.

She landed at the mouth of the Orange River at 5.25 a.m. (G.M.T.), having flown from Dundee in 40 hours and five minutes.

Major R. Mayo, designer of the machine, sald to Reuter: "It was a magnificent accomplishment by the machine and members of the crew, Mercury could have got to Capetown If the wind had been negotiable. We

must not be discouraged about it, because the long distance reaplane record has been beaten by about 800 miles. Everything also functioned perfectly."

Mercury left Alexander Bay at 2.35 p.m. (G.M.T.) for Capetown and was expected at Capetown at 6 5.m.
