Germans In Hongkong To "Carry On"

The local office of the Trans-Ocean News Service, a German news agency, this morning emphatically denied reports published in local Chilnose papers that officials of the service hnd received orders to leave Hongkong within a week and return to Germany.

The service is currying on and no special preparations are contemplated for leaving the Colony or closing the service, it is stated,

It is also denied that a con- ference took place in the Ger- man Consulate on Wednesday evening, or that any such con- ference is planned.

IN RIVER

CANTON, Sept. 29. CHINESE sources hore believe that a Japanese attempt to extend the Sino- Japanese hostilities to South China is imminent.

It is believed that an attempt may be made short- ly to storm the Pearl River and run the blockade of the Bocca Tigris Forts.

Increased Japanese naval con- centrations in the vicinity of Hongkong and the Pearl River delta add eredulence to theso reports which, however, do not emanate from official sources.

An effort to storm the Forts would probably prove more difficult than was the case when the Japanese displayed so much activity in this region four months ago.

The shore batteries on both sides of the river have been con- siderably strengthened in the past three months.

In addition. the waterway is now protected by a lotuta of rpeedy torpedo motor-boats, mos- quito craft which were purchased from Italy some time ago.

The booms across the river have also been considerably strengthened. While they permit irame between Hongkong, Macao and Canton ai present, they are constructed in such away that they can be flung across the river, blocking all traffic, at a
