EOGRAPHY," Mr. E. C. Bentley has justly observed, "is about Maps, but Biography is about Chaps." Turner, the great English painter and inspired forerunner of tho French Impressionists, was one of those Chaps who were born to be written about.
What a grand subject for a novel he would make. its eccentric," miserly, illiterate glu-drinking genius, who lived A double-illo and left half a million pounds when he died at the age of eighty-one.
Mr. Kencinas Foss has conscientiously assembled all the facts in "The Double its of 1. M. W. Turner" (Martin Becker, 101. Od.), and, although he has fallen short of writing the great bio- graphy that the man deserves, he has produced a very entertaining book.
Turner was born a few hundred yards from this offea 148 years ago in Malden-Jane. His father was a barber and his mother later went mad. At After he was exhibiting at the Royal Academy.
HE grew up to be an ugly, rather dirty, bandy-legged man, aiter. nately mean and generous, quarrel. some, and to the end unable to write even a letter without mistakes of speling and grammar.
