A remarkable protest against the Kenya Government's cattle deslock-1 ing scheme took place here recently.

Between 2,000 and 3,000 natives from the Wakamba reserve, about 20 miles away, trekked into the city and

Kendal had 3.04in. in 24 hours, and at Ambleside and Winder- refused to disperse unless they were mere over 3in. fell in 16 hours.

Meanwhile, Southern England was enjoying hot sunshine.

Hundreds of acres were flood- ed at Ambleside. Water cas- caded down the mountain sides, carrying away hay, uprooting fruit trees and drowning sheep and chickens.

A wedding was nearly "washed" out at Burnside. With nearly 2ft, of water in her home, Miss Vera Wal- Эксг went to her uncle's house to dress for the ceremony in the village. church.

Even then the wedding was half an hour late, for the bridegroom, Mr. Arthur Bell, of Kendal, was held up by floods while driving to the village.

$ft. DEEP IN HOUSES

Serious flooding was also caused in Cumberland, where rivers over- flowed their banks, taking toll of sheep and poultry, interrupting tele- phonic and rond communications,

and driving campers to shelter.

At Cleator, part of a bridge was washed away, while at Egremont a heavy roller on a bowling green dis- appeared.

Water was 5ft, deep in houses at Grasslot, Maryport, West Cumber- land, while 100 houses and shops were affected.

The destocking scheme has been put into operation in an effort to re- store the fertility of the soll and raise; the standard of enttle.

The natives altuch great import- ance to the numbers of their beasts, and are quite indifferent to their Carter quality. According to the Iteport of 1934, a population of under 3,000,000 was about 0,000,000 head of cattle, yet has no milk for the greater part of the year.

Fuced by the unexpected influx of natives, the authorities suggested that a meeting should be held in the reserve to discuss the matter. The natives, however, declined, ur they wanted an immediate decision. They have camped by the roadside, near the racecourse, and mounted police are keeping crowds of other natives at a distance.
