I lost no time in communicating with the Honorary Secretary to the Society on the subject, and I received in reply a letter dated 26th June, from which it will be seen that through the inadvertent omission of the Honorary Secretary in the letter in which he applied for the Rocket-apparatus to state his reasons why it could not be supplied gratis. Your Lordship was not made aware that the Society was in a position to purchase the apparatus for a very much smaller sum than that which the Crown Agents have paid for it, and consequently Your Lordship naturally considered it a work of supererogation to telegraph, and fortunately authorized the Crown Agent to purchase it for the Society.
As a matter of fact, however, the apparatus which has been procured, is on a much more extensive scale than was ever contemplated by the Society, and is far more expensive than the Society is in a position to afford;
