Shanghai, July 6.
Future developments in the Sino-Japanese War form the subject of lively discussions in | international circles in Shanghai on the occasion of the first anniversary of the commencement of hostilities.
It is pointed out that the Japanese now occupy approximately one-third of the Chinese Republic, including some of the most important industrial and commercial sections.
Apart from Jehol and Charhar, which were occupied by Japanese troops previous to the outbreak of war, the Japanese now claim to occupy the provinces of Hopei, Shansi, Shantung, Kiangsu, Anhwei and parts of Chekiang, Honan
and Shensi.
The Japanese have advanced from is estimated at 150,000,000 people. the north to the Yellow River, from The way fronts in China extend the east, to the western border of about 1,400 miles, compared with the Anhwci, while in a southerly diree- 400 miles Western Front in the Great on they have penetrated as far is War of 1914-18 and 145 mile front in Hangchow.
the Russo-Japanese War of 1004-05.
It is stressed, however, that opera--Reuter Special. tions have practically come to a stands in the north owing to the Yellow River floods,
On the other hand, in the Yangtse River region the Japanese have reached Hukow, which is only about 125
miles from Hankow,
International circles here are inclined to the belief that the main body of Japanese troops operating in the Yangise River region will not advance along the river basin, but wlil turn south in an attempt to seize Nanchang, and thus Isolate Hankow from Hongkong and Canton.
