Novels
MERICAN novelists have an
endless appetite for the life around them. Like lean cută
at a big bowl of cream, they inp up their world with gusto. Watch William Faulkner at work, if you don't believe me.
Argument mges round his writing. Certainly ho has never worried about those people who snart "Incompre hensiblot at him and leave it at that. Out, if you like being moved to harrer and pity after the manner of the Elizabethans, he is your man,
In The Unvanquliked (Chatto and Windua, 78, kl.), he is still absessed by war-his country's Owil. War and the war between white men and Negroes. And he is still na vivid as ever. And easier to understand.
Through the simplicity of a child who is surprised to find a Yanken looking very like a man, he shows you the extremely complicated relationship bdLween the Negroes Who were
slaved in the Bouth and their masters who fought for slavery as a holy cause.
Stand with him on the long, dusty road and watch that black tren hurrying north, the sick and aged falling by the way, but none berdina the call to stop or to turn back. Aince somewhere ahend a cleansing river (they called R Jurdan) WAN waiting to be crossed.

There is a great novel to be written about the helplessness-and, therefore, the hopelessness-of a man condemned by society and circumstance to an ex- istence of qufel, almost comfortable futility in Much surroundings. And Mr. Benney may write i--one day
Meanwhile, this is a disappointing buik. I catight many glimpses of horrifying reality, but they weren't fol- lowed up. There is much sensitive writing here. Yet, for me, the story's truth is dissivaled long before the end.

O you remember the festive though Impractical cry, "Hang the Kalser!" which went up just after the end of the War?
Well, twenty years after that movement collapsed, George Eylvester Viereck, German- American, has brought out a large, expensive and ingenious, book to prove that the poor old gentleman nover deserved to be hanged at all. Indeed, Mr. Viereck's main trend of argument is that, considering his atro- cious upbringing, entourage of syco- phants and general bad luck, the pre- sent resident of Doorn in not such a bad old scout after all,

in
Mr. Viereck does all this by means of a most elaborate mechanism seeming impartiality. His book called The Kaiser on Trial (Duck- worth, 31a), and its scheme is this:
A trial of William ia conducted before five judges and a Jury. Prose calor and counsel for the defence call witnesses, alive and dead-in- cluding the ex-All Highest-and, after describing their evidence a Hille, Mr. Viereck rewrites the his tory of their relations with the Kaiser.
In this process he is noticeably partial and unfair.
All the horrors are dragged out and shown to us in the most glaring melight. The chapter about Holstein Cinventor of the Schnitzel which bears irls name, by the way) is called "The Man with the Hyena Eyes."
Eulenburg becomes "The Jekyll and Hyde of the Imperial Court," and you Billow LO Chancellor With the Berpent's Tongue."
The comments on these personingen are just as highly sensoned n you would expect from such silly chapter headings
Wretched William is betrayed again and again by his immediate advisera and closest friends, mialed and duped by wicked foreigners, although he is the friend of pence-the most trusting of all men. If you were vulgar enough --and I am-you would consider his portrait by Mr. Viereck that of n Bucker aniong Emperors
