OU know what it's like to alt for hours in a stuffy, smoke-filled ratiway carriage and then, as the train files on through the dark- ness, to open the window and put your head out to the rush of clean right air?
First Things First, by Frank Tilsley (Michael Joseph, 10s. ed.), is like that; invigorating, vitalising. It is an uncommon book, in some ways a unique book For Mr. Tilsley an uncommon chap.
There is a snatch of autoblography in it, including an engaging reference to his until recent belief that Ibid was an ancient philosopher, probably contem- porary with Ovid. "I was always seclug him quoted at the bottom of pages."
There is quite a slice of philosophy:
"One of the most astonishing and encouraging things about human beings is the way, in spite of everything, they keep on being human, and the way, given half a chance, they will develop into some- thing far better than we would appear to have any right to expect."
There is any amount of debunking of the current irant. "I'm instinctively far more inclined to hit a Conservative on the head with Das Kapital than persuade him to read it," But the greater part of the book is a sort of Tilsley's Testament. And you should know a little about Tilsley be- Тоге ԱՐ come, to the Tesin- ment.
He is, on his own confession, 33, n Socialist, a Northcountryman, a beer drinker. Son of working-class parents, he has had seventeen different jobs since he left (coun- c) school at 14.

Neither has anybody else. For Mr. Waugh is in rattling good form nearly nl the way in this Batire on to Press. A trag comedy, dancing with light- hearted savagery and strewn with be- wildered victims across two continents. A merry massacre In which the Journalists of Britain can take what's coming to them.
There is a great deal of plot, art- fully summarised above. And a very, very happy ending. But not before the Nice Young Marr has shown his sweAL- ing imitators how deftly—I spotted one or two minor misses-this sort of thing can be done. He still carries the same old knuckledusters inside those velvet gloves,

TWO great novelists come to us-one of them for the last time in translation this weck: Thomas Mann and the late Maxim Gorki.
Herr Mann has written long books before-Buddenbrooks, which made nim famous, and The Magio Mountain, in my view the finest fiction written aince the war. Where other authors inke weeks over their work, he takes years.
Now come to latest volumes in hit most monumental effort, the re-telling of the story of Joseph (Joseph in Egypt. Published by Becker and War- burg. Two vola. 15. A score of verses in Genesis expanded to nearly seven hundred pages. Monumental is the word!
And like a manument, the book is vast and awe-inspiring ("However did they build these Pyramids?" and affecting-and, at times, I fear, boring,
too.
In the earlier chapters Joseph is taken in captivity through Egypt, and here Herr Mann is at his best, showing us Hellopoils and the Sphinx by moon- light and Memphis and Phornoh's golden city, Thebes. Then, as Omar- siph, Joseph is sold into the house of Paliphar
The second volume is heavy with the passion of Potiphar's wife for the handsome young exile. The author, who is a master of morbidity, obviously enjoys himacil in the slow, remorseless development of that disastrous infatu- ation. Cencals rewritten by Freud.... And, because Herr Mann is a genius, he manages to make his points la spité of the outworn archato style and tlio accasional ponderousness of approach. But need ho make them again and again and again?
Corki ran to length, too, in his story of the plgrimage of a Russian in tilectual, Úlim Barghin, towards the revolutionary shrine of 1917. The Spectre (Appleton-Century, 128. 0:1) in the fourth and final instalment of a work which covers several thousand pages.
Olim is seen baltling along, in storm of argument and ideas on the Just stages of his journey. Gorki bad not quite finished with him, when he died. But this is a fascinating, disturb ing and memorable book,
For, apart from the immediato sig nificance of the story, you can catch authentie echoes of the great Russian novelists (including Gorki himself). Echops what we still never hear again.
