Outfit for Miss Junior
and she can make
most of it herself
CHILDREN'S clothes are so easy to make that I sup-
pose there are very few mothers who don't at least supplement their ready-made purchases with a few gar- ments they themselves have made. And the quantity of fabric needed is relatively so small that the cost is low.
Many girls, too, from the age of 12 like to tackle some dress- making for themselves. They have outgrown the days when dressing of dolls interests and amuses them, and want to try some- thing a bit more profitable. This is a good instinct to encourage, for it is practical work that will be of use to them later on. It develops their dress sense and their feeling for colours and fabrics. So to-day I've chosen a pattern which mother and young daughter can work on together.
The pattern which Angrave has illustrated here, provides a most varied outfit for the girl aged from 8 to 15 years. Let's see what sort of ensemble we can make from it.
first a skirt
First of all a skirt, a simple straightforward one with an inverted box pleat at the centre front, a scam at each side and a plain, slightly flared buck. It fastens at the left side, with 41 zipper or with press studs; and the waistline is neatened into a band of self-fabric.
Make one of Bannet and another of white or natural or pas- iel-coloured linen tweed. You will need from a yard to 144 yards of 54-inch woolien; or from 1% to 1% yards of 36-inch fabric.
then a
blouse
You'll need a pretty blouse to wear with the skirt: something light and dainty but not frilly- frilly and babyish. The one shown in the draw- ing would look delightful made up in one of those lovely Tyrolean cottons that can be had in multi-colours or in one colour and white.
There is not a lot of making to this blouse
so your daughter will probably be able to cut
it out and complete it by herself-though she should tack the sleeves in and let you give the O.K. before she stitches them.
For the blouse you will need from 1 yard to 14 yards of 35- inch fabric. You could make another blouse for colder days in a novelty light-weight jersey fabric.

this jacket makes a suit
Now for a jacket which can be worn over the flannel or linen You see one drawn on the second figure--16 is includes in the same pattern. A neal. Peter Pan collar, short sleeves tucked to square up the fulness, buttons all down the front.
You could make it of the same linen as the skirt and so have a complete suit; or of plain wool jersey in a colour that would be
a good contrast on either the flannel or linen skirt. It you find¦ any difficulty in getting well matched buttons, use big moulds and have them covered with self fabric.

If you make the jacket from the same material as the skirt you will need from 25 to 34a yurdds of 35-inch fabric for both Karments.

You can from the same design make yet two other styles of dress. They are shown in the small line drawings. For the first one, the square-necked style, I suggest you use a plain coloured loosely woven canvas type of cotton or linen for skirt and top. For the fringe trimming you pull out the cross-wise threads at sleeve and lower hem edges and knot them into tassels. There
