Many Chinese people in the Colony thislike treatment given by European doctors or by Chinese doctors prae- tising Western medleine. This was mode evident during the smallpox epidemic, when scores of people hid patients rather than bring them to the notice of the Government au- thorities.
This morning, a remand case was Barnett tuken before Mr. K. M. A

allow his child to to to hospital, al- though her left leg was fractured.
The child was a six-year-old girl and she had been knocked down by apprentice a bicycle driven by an carpenter named Cheng Fan, 10.
He
did not report the accident, and was charged with this offence.
Pointing out to the girl's mother that the father of the child had re- fused to allow her to receive proper treatment in hospital, Mr. Burnett said: "I shall award no amends In this Court. I am not going to make the defendant
pay money to be squandered on Chinese doctors."
Mr. Barnett later said that the complainant might waste $500 or $1.- 000 on quack doctors and never get the child better.
Cheng was fined $10, or 20 days' imprisonment.
