COUNTRYSIDE NEWS

JOHN MORGAN, “Daily Herald" Agricultural Correspondent, went for a walk over the fiolds recently with FREDERIC G. ROPER, staff photographer, Here is their story.

The fine days, with their longer hours of day- light, tempt us to try out the favourite evening or Sunday walk. The road ends, the half-built houses are left behind, the field path begins.

Cows at the gate, suckling week-old babies at their sides, wait for the cowman's homeward call. The dog must be kept to heel, for spread over the meadow the strongest lambs are picking at tasty shoots of new grass. But lamb. ing goes on for a month yet. A'look over the farmyard hurdles and there is a ewe mother, her twins born only yesterday.

Or there is the grey hunter hanging his head over the hospital box door. "Itching for a gallop," says the friendly groom. This and the like of it is what fills out the delight of the country walk. Not a mile from the town's latest housing estate, a heron blunders up from the

reedy waste under the river bank where it was fishing for aels. The murmur of approaching voices puts the bird on wing. Old Father Swan surges past, intent only on his amorous over- tures. And then over a stile and a herd of mansive white-faced Herefords moves lazily aside, Usually, the more fearioma a bullock looks, the more shy is the creature.

So

Soon round the bend a bargeé hovos in sight, his great Shire horse straining at the tow line, tugging at the load of timber behind him. leisurely on until the field path finishes in a road again. Over it rowdy rooks in the top of the elme are carrying out a preliminary inspection of likely nesting quarters. Rooks choose only sound trees,

Dusk falls, so it is indoors again, with supper time for most of us, and a read of the paper. It has been "just a walk over the fields," but all so much a part of the every day beauty which about us lies.
