THERE is one very good reason why the Italian Government is in such a hurry to obtain British recognition of its ownership of Abyssinia..
Its difficultics there are increasing, and the know- ledge that other nations had acquiesced in their dis- appearance from the map might discourage the leaders of the Abyssinian revolts. Still better, recognition by Great Britain of Italy's enlarged African Empire might be followed by a loan for its development.
Only the desperate need for help in dealing with the Abyssinians could explain the Italian promise to with- draw from Spain. That, at any rate, is the opinion of those observers who, do not believe that Signor Mussolini is so frightened by the appearance of German troops on the Brenner that he is willing to reverse the foreign policy he has pursued since 1935.
