'London, Apr. 10.
The contest for the British light- heavyweight championship between Harvey and McAvoy was the first important contest between big men in this country for many months. It is probable that the reason the Night heavyweight championship has never excited as much public interest 0% those at other weights is to be found in the old saying of the prize-ring-- "n 12-st. man is big enough for any- thing." It is felt that if a man of 12 st. 7 lb, were really good he would fight as a heavyweight. So far, however, as Harvey le concerned. be has actually held the heavyweight championship, and made the match with McAvoy in the hope that it would lead to a contest with Farr. Moreover, both McAvoy and Harvey

Both men are veterans as age goes in the ring, Harvey being thirty and McAvoy two years younger, but both were probably as fit ns ever they had been. McAvoy was supposed to be the harder hitter, and few who saw it will forget the fearful punch with which he knocked out Phillips to win the championship, but Har- vey had the advantage
in height. weight, and reach. On paper it won as good a match as was ever made, and so it turned out in practice, al though both men had too much res- pect for each other, and there was too much clinching for it to #per- tacular.
