I don't know what the Chief Justice had for this opinion about the class of men, who are at the direction of Companies here.
On the 6th March last in a letter he said "If companies are to be reduced to that state &c. "Directions then will not be persons "such as are now filling "the position but persons who will "get business by the large amounts they will pay as bribes to, and when the insured ones come to make "This claim he will get what the policy may give him "nothing more." (See Daily Press 7th March 1876).
I have two or three remarks to make in the return of Companies by the Chief Justice, notably that the Union Insurance Company is limited and that the shares are 250 of $5,000 each. There are 500 shares of $2,500 each and 2500 paid up. There is unlimited liability in the members. It is quite likely that several Companies have failed, but so did the Harbouring Mining venture.
