Pressure on Flanks To Keep Pace With Advance in Centre

Hankow, May 5.

Following a break-through in the Japanese centre north-east of Taierchwang. the Chinese have launched a vigorous attack to drive back their adversaries on the right wing in order to consolidate the ground gained, according to Chinese despatches from the front.

The Chinese positions in south Shantung resemble the letter "W" with the flanks reaching Yihsien on the west and Tancheng on the east, with Taierchwang and Pihsien the southermost points.

A maniacal attack on the occupants of a bedroom in the early hours of this morning brought sudden tragedy to 499, The Peak, the home of Mr. Robert H. Challinor, District Manager in Hongkong of Imperial Chemical Industries (China) Ltd., and his murdered wife.

Mrs. Sybil Ruby Challinor, aged 45, was stabbed to death, and Mr. Challinor lies in the War Memorial Hospital with multiple stab injuries, inflicted by a table knife.

The alleged assailant, Lam Chum, house-boy employed by Mr. Challinor, is in the prison ward of Queen Mary Hospital, suffering from concussion and a stab wound.

A post-mortem examination of the body of Mrs. Challinor was held shortly before noon.
